Notes I meant this to be like a starter for a lesson in ‘Human Relations’ way back in the early eighties, trying to help children in my W.A. wheatbelt District High School understand what was going on in their own small town of Pingelly, W. and the wider state and nation beyond them. I was the Principal there for four years, the first woman secondary school principal in our State. In England where I had grown up there were plenty of women running secondary schools, so in my mind it was not unusual to aspire to further promotion, once my own children were independent. One day soon after the mid-eighties and all the 1983 excitement in Fremantle of the America’s Cup fame I hoped to become a Senior High School Principal. By 1985, however, I had somehow suddenly become ‘retired’ from teaching in the WA public school system, with a very generous and puzzling life-long pension from the WA Government Employees’ Superannuation Fund.

This ‘retirement’ was notionally on the medical grounds of ‘stress’ related to the control of ‘local’ adolescents in my school. But I didn’t feel in the least bit stressed, and I loved my job! Forty years ago, however, I was entirely ignorant of the history of that little town in wheatbelt WA.. Nor could I have described, even less understood, how it had been affected by the ‘White Australia Policy’ of federated Australia which had been enacted law and then repealed after some sixty years. Individual states were left to make their own rules of devolution after 1973 less than a decade before I was appointed in 1979 to the position of Principal of Pingelly District High School. I am ashamed now, of my unawareness, even ignorance, of that history. Perhaps I can perhaps be forgiven because I had seen no ‘black’ people in Perth, or even in the southern wheatbelt area around Pingelly.

When I first arrived in Australia in the early seventies from Kenya in East Africa I had been encouraged to come by the generous passage assistance of £200 paid for myself, my husband and two children who were assessed as an ideal ‘white’ immigrant family. There weren’t enough qualified teachers and accountants here ‘downunder’ it seemed. I was too busy then in my role of wife and mother to ask myself these now urgent questions about how aboriginal people, formerly occupants of their land for millenia, were now faring in Australia after two centuries of settlement by the overwhelming number of white people being financially assisted by government to settle in their country.

Although a so-called ‘educated’ person, I knew nothing much about Australia, having read only that Captain Cook ‘discovered’ it in 1770! Queen Victoria had been told it was terra nullius with no one living there so it was claimed in her name and incorporated into the British Empire. It therefore needed populating by British people, particularly by trained teachers and accountants like my husband and myself. I did know it had a very warm climate but after years of living in Africa that didn’t worry me one bit.

Nor was I concerned about teaching in a school with supposedly ‘black’ children! I saw none in my first days there when I was organizing myself and staff with rosters and timetables and soon helped by some parents with the canteen and children’s play areas. That planning was the sort of thing I’d done when I first chanced on teaching as what became my one and only real career; a ‘brief and brilliant career‘ as someone I much respected once described it to me. Of course, I’ve been happily and usefully employed in several jobs since then, but none quite as fully satisfying. Oddly, however, it set me up to become, much later, something of the political commentator and journalist I’d once aspired to be after University.

All that ‘teaching’ experience in multi-racial schools might explain something about why I wrote these lines last night, July 6th, 2023, after watching former parliamentarian, Tony Abbott, speaking to Sarah Fergusson, on behalf of the the ‘No’ vote for the Advance Australia party in our national debate on The Voice. This is a debate in which I now want to actively participate whenever and wherever possible. I’ll report more later as events unfold from here! I hope the ‘pome’ is not partisan, or contrarian, but simply educational.

Could be a fun game at home at teatime after school! School starts back this week, so already I’ve had ‘Yes’ messages on my phone as families get home from holidays.

The Taser! Useful Tool or Torture Weapon?

Is a taser a tool, or a torture weapon?
That’s something Australians should think upon;
Late news suggests to me that’s more than just a teaser.
Imagine an old grey guy, nicknamed ‘Grumpy Geyser’ –
He’s limping his frame across the road,
A bread knife in one hand has him slowed.
A panicked nurse had reported him escaped from care.
He’s armed, so police on arrival should beware!
The fellah says he’s tired of being locked up at night.
After five long years he’s out now, looking for a fight.

He’s not okay, mate! She won’t be right!

Note. My italics are meant to suggest that often used Oz reply of, “She’s right, mate!” meaning, “Life’s great!” when asked about how things are going when meeting mates. Here, there was no need to ask. The answer is obvious to all of us, ”Things are bad and he’s real mad! She won’t be right!”

Comment: This pome almost shot out of me as I switched off the tele to go to bed just after last night’s late news. The item which struck me was about a policeman ‘tasering’ a very old lady, a few years my senior, a week before, after a panicked call from her a nursing home in Cooma. She was apparently reported as dangerous, escaped from care, using a walking frame and brandishing a knife. There wasn’t much more detail than that but it obviously stuck in my old head. Next day I put more work into it as I read a few more media reports by journos who thought it worth a late news line.

Yes, there it was; a 95 year old lady approached by a policeman, called out by SOS from her nursing home. She was pushing her walking frame, also brandishing a knife, then she was tasered and fell with resultant head injuries. Somehow this was because she’d been reported as dangerous, escaped from care, and armed. Disabled by the taser shot, she fell down, screaming out at someone, no one knows at whom, maybe the policeman? Then came her hospitalization and days later her ultimate death with family members at her bedside, some mercifully having had time to fly in from overseas locations. I can imagine their distress and self-questioning about their once lively old mum, who only a few years back had celebrated her 80th birthday abseiling down from a mountain top. That once happy event was now a sad story obviously worth media mention, as seen in various reports with a focus like the one about her Family’s message to police after tasering of 95-year-old Clare Nowland in NSW nursing home7NEWS

That attracted plenty of attention from readers, commentators, and very quickly from an oddly relevant variety of advertisers. It seemed to me to be further hyped up by the unfair implication that senior State police force and administration were uncaring, or even attempting a ‘cover up’ by refusing to release to media the police officer’s camera footage taken of the incident. That had been routinely retained to be used as evidence if required by later procedures. I felt that that Police executives and Minister were as as clear as could be expected in fronting journalists and had acted promptly in their contact with family members. The public has as much information as a pending investigation legitimately can allow since it seems there will be a trial and charging of the police officer involved with murder. All of this requires due process of the law which will take time. I hope it will be time well used.

12/06/2023, I myself still haven’t been able to understand how a taser, for so long now, a useful tool for police control of likely violent offenders, came to be used against this 95 year old lady; nor why the reporting of it disturbs me still. Friends I chat to at breakfast at South Beach Cafe in Fremantle tend to think it’s a simple case of a policeman doing the wrong thing, making a bad mistake. I’ve had to review my own thoughts and feelings on this several times.

Reading elsewhere, I learned that such SOS call-outs to old age care homes, whether private, state or charity and church funded, are far more frequent than reported in this latest story from NSW. I was reminded of the heart-wrenching evidence and lengthy findings of the very recent ‘Royal Commission into Aged Care’ whose Report was ultimately printed and published in three bound volumes circulated throughout the nation in 2021. I wondered if any of them had been taken down from tiered bookshelves and were being read for reference right now. In the two years since then there have been other state government ‘Reviews’ and federal ‘Plans for Action’ but how much progress has been made? Let’s hope that public debate about this taser shot, something police have for years been trained to use as just a ‘six secondsjolt of pain‘ to control the potentially violent will shock bureaucrats and politicians into action. Will there be real legislative reform rather than what seems to be a ‘cop out’ using a policeman as our communal whipping boy for PR cover.

So, my thinking is still somewhat hot and bothered but after my daily walk, cooled down by some rare and heavy WA rain, I’ve settled down a bit. I recall that some pollies, i.e. those in our new Federal government had already begun to do something for Aged Care! There’s hope to read into our new Treasurer, Jim Chalmers’ speech, in his Budget 2023–24 – Department of Health and Aged Care.

I won’t, however, just hope nor bet on that, not being a gambling woman. I’ll be here watching ABC’s Question Time, lobbying local and federal MPs. I can be having my say about Aged Care while I’m giving my support for the Indigenous Voice, at the same time speaking up for the many old people, less fortunate than myself, who too often are put into ‘care homes’ and somehow forgotten. One last thought here – this is something that will affect everyone in Australia. More and more of us are living to be very old! Let’s learn to better look after ourselves as well as each other!

NOTES: This pome is for John Barilaro who asked, “All I did was apply for a job. What did I do wrong? I got offered a job and I accepted a job.” I wondered about that too. I see Ronnie Salt on Twitter explained his recent shenanigans brilliantly! Her commentaries, and Wikipedia give a much fuller account of his life and ‘career’ during when he seems to have imagined himself as a great Lothario and ‘did a job‘ on many women. Thanks to Ronnie, though, it’s all very clear what he did wrong in taking that job from Jenny West. So I think I’ll try to post the sort of Dear John letter which one or other of his ill-done-by ‘amores’ or victims might like. Most of us wimmin know that a ‘Dear John’ letter is a very determined “Goodbye!” and to that I wanted to add a bit of bite, not spite so much as revenge. Then I discovered that neither pork nor bacon are served in New York prisons! Now, I don’t think John would like it if the FBI detained him over there! No ‘pork bariling’ allowed!

Notes: The image above reminds me of the frank comment made by The President of France M. Macron about our national ‘leader’ back in 2021. The submarine deal and its financial/defence ramifications were nothing compared with the feelings of shame so many Australians felt about the trashing of our reputation for being a straight and honest people, however multicultural we may be. It was a significant factor in our recent election. I have long wanted to publish these few lines I wrote back then and now I can without fear of an arrest by Le Premier Menteur Morrison or having some legal writ landing on my doorstep, satirically speaking, of course! Oz Is Ready For The Reds! The Blues Are Truly Blue!

Remember the Budget in 2019?  A 7:30 ‘news’ transmission?
Used as free election hustings for the Coalition?
PM Morrison claimed we were ‘Back in Black’
That was a big lie, we now see looking back.

Three years on, a ‘pollie’ clearly not lyin’-
Independent candidate Dr Monique Ryan,
Has replaced Josh, as member for Kooyong,
He’d rested on his laurels for far too long.

The National Party of the Coalition,
Still can’t agree that we must transition,
Climate change is here and it is real,
Not invented by an independent Teal!

So Oz has chosen Labor, all heart, blood red,
Uluru Statement, education, healthy children well fed,
A working wage and oldies in good care.
Here’s our Australia – just, free and fair!

Notes: I wrote this a week before the election, wondering if Australians were ready for an ALP government at last, then was side-tracked by the last week of the campaign so forgot to post it! Turns out, I was somewhat prophetic in my writing and we’ve all downed a few few glasses of red since then! I’ve had to do some minor adjustments on my pome, like changing question marks to exclamations, but I think it fits the occasion now!

Here in the West we were all MORE than ready for more reds on Saturday at 9.00 pm our time, with 72 ALP seats and winning! We’re still to reach that magic number 76 and soon we’ll be flying even higher! Now we have the Teals and Greens etc in the mix we see those LNP blues are really BLUE. Three days after the election, our Labor govt is already working; our new PM and Foreign Minister are in QUAD talks in Japan, those three flags are firmly placed for more strong messages and media announcements to the nation from Parliament House. Minister Burney MP is moving on the Uluru Statement. ICAC is not far away. Change is here! What else is there to say?

Note: It really is his birthday! He won’t be happy on birthdays ahead of him if many of us have our way! We all know about Friday 13th, don’t we? It’s doggerel, so forgive the mismatch of second verse! By the way, I don’t seem to have seen other references to his birthday in the media. Am I right?

Is Josh trying the Abbott 2010 Budgie Smuggler Trick?

Is this a re-hash of ‘old hat’ Liberal bait, aimed at voters, females and males?
Modestly, dressed to please Conservative men now the LNP are on the rails?
Clever ‘outsider’ Josh though cheerful isn’t joking, clad from neck to knee,
Is of multi-cultural Australian family, healthy, fit to rule, and as all can see.

He’s no ‘big swinging dick’ whose ilk has Ms Bishop complain.
Can Country folk look to him in crises when there’s little or too much rain?
So, tomorrow will there be more budget bribes on offer
To be paid for from the national coffer?

Or can he show he’s not praying for another miracle like PM Morrison
But preparing himself for a much longer run,
Knowing that true government is a marathon not a sprint?
Win or lose, he’ll stay on as Leader of the Opposition, do his stint!

Note: Reviewing this on the Winter Solstice, 21/06/22, and a month into PM Albanese’s new government it’s pretty clear that what Josh’s last minute manoevring with his ‘liberal’ mates just did not work out……….

Notes: It’s 24/06/22. We’re well into our new Labor government, so these lines written for now EX PM, Scott Morisson, are well out of date and I’m tempted to delete them entirely. Media commentary suggests he may never recover from his removal from both home and office. So for the moment I’ll leave this piece to rest. Maybe I’ll can re-cycle it one day, perhaps an obit or similar brief comment?

Amazing Grace.

“Amazing Grace!”

Isn’t that our PM’s favorite hymn?

Did he pray for a souvenir snap with him?

But this photo-op shows ‘preyed-on’ victim.

All year he’s ignored ‘The Cause’ of her fame,

To give voice to women, shout out names

Of bullies for whom it’s often a game

For their gangs to play again and again.

Sometimes a good cop shows up and they’re caught,

‘News’ writes a story and juicy report

Of fighting, screaming, how wildly she fought!

Yet often the case is thrown out of court.

Other abuse, more discretely played out

Was in some High Office when staff weren’t about.

In Confession poor innocents found out

No help would be had from those thought devout.

Now headlines are hers because she refused

To nicely behave as he wants her to;

To pretend yet again she likes being used.

That’s why Australians all say, “Grace, we love you!

You beat him!” Framed picture-perfect for us too!
